Another excellent read although due to the high incidence of heart disease in my family I have, alas, been advised to cut down my salt intake. Your remark about salt having been used as currency jogged my memory into recalling the word 'salary' somehow derives from 'salt'. A quick googling of 'salary' along with 'etymology' states (via the magic of copy and paste):Salary comes from the Latin word salarium, which also means "salary" and has the root sal, or "salt." In ancient Rome, it specifically meant the amount of money allotted to a Roman soldier to buy salt, which was an expensive but essential commodity.
My go-to salt is Cerebos, an iodised table salt. The UK packing is a bit dull (logo + royal warrant), but outside of the UK they still preserve the vintage image of a little boy chasing a hen with the slogan "See How It Runs" !!
This made me realize how much salt I have! Diamond Crystal for every day, Maldon for flaking, and a selection from J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works out of West Virginia. They make a ramp salt I really like with scrambled eggs.
Amazing work, as per usual! I may or may not own salts from all categories of this post 🤪 🧂
p.s. If you're a fan of spices in general, next time you're in NYC you should check out Kalustyan's -- the most magical and expansive spice store on Earth! (as far as I know, any way!)
I learn so much from your deep dives and love the huge array of products you find. And thank you for having me this week! Love to be included in an awesome Substack!!
I saw a show at the salt shed recently and really enjoyed it! such a great repurposed old building (also no shame to Guster!)
Adjacent to the pocket tin group, I always kept salt at my desk when I worked in an office. people thought it was weird but after a while, they'd come meandering over to my desk asking to borrow some salt for their lunch.
Such a great post! Loved reading Sarah’s section as well!
thanks charu!
How happy am I to have discovered this! Wonderful, and who knew there were private pocket salt tins? .... I'm now off to investigate beans...
you are too kind, jo! pocket salt tins are a must for a well-lived life if you ask me. hope you enjoyed the bean issue too!

there are definitely some goodies in there!
I want to unsubscribe, please!
if you share your email I'm happy to remove you from my list!
Wow. 90s kid here and that Windsor Salt box in the “old” section brought me back. My mom had that stocked at all times.
no way! I love when I'm surprised by the decades some of these are from. I wouldn't have known that was from the 90s!
Loved this! I have salt in my purse, right now😆
